Version 0.33: This article is up to date for the latest stable release of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
| While many locales across the Dungeon are dedicated to the long-interred restless dead, those whose remains are fresh or lost are collected in the floating ceremonial chambers of the Necropolis. Each soul is enshrined and tended to by the maintenance staff recreating both their lives and their moments of death, helping visitors bid farewell to the departed. With the advent of adventurers seeking the Orb of Zot, these realms have been repurposed: such ghosts are blinded by rage and impossible to control, so both them and their stolen possessions are sealed away in these realms of reconciliation. |
Necropolis is a temporary portal that contains player ghost vaults. It is signalled by a "funeral chant".
Up to 3 Necropolises can appear in a game, once in each of the following sets of branches:
- Dungeon (starting from D:5), Lair, Orcish Mines
- Snake Pit, Spider's Nest, Swamp, Shoals, Vaults
- Elven Halls, Crypt, Depths
Necropolises will take 50% longer than normal to disappear once they're announced.
Layout
Each Necropolis contains an entry grove, wide open hallways, and 3 vaults containing player ghosts, each of which is sealed by a runed door or transporter. No more than one of the ghost vaults in any Necropolis will contain only a player ghost, and no more than one of those ghost vaults will contain only undead. Themes Necropolis subvaults can lean upon can include:
- subsets of monsters from the branch the Necropolis was found in,
- (Necropolises found in Vaults or the Elven Halls, as well or Depths and Crypt, will share monsters with the other.)
- various schools of magic, like Hexes or Air Magic or Earth Magic,
- or given gods (like warriors around an Okawaru altar, or chaotic / debuffing monsters around a Xom altar, or Abyss monsters around a Lugonu altar).
Necropolises are automatically mapped on entry.
Tips & Tricks
- Monsters in this portal will patrol their vaults, so teleporting immediately after opening a runed door won't break up the contents of a vault so easily. It may still be worthwhile if you would otherwise be surrounded by melee threats.
History
- The Necropolis was added in 0.33. Prior to this, player ghost vaults would generate randomly throughout the dungeon.
