The rod of the swarm allows its wielder to summon large groups of spiders and insects to his aid, quickly creating a large number of fairly weak allies. While this can allow you to effectively swarm dangerous monsters in the early- and mid-game, it comes at a high hunger cost, requires too many MP to cast it very often, and generally becomes obsolete once you get toward the end game. Although far from useless, you likely won't want to waste your scrolls of recharging maxing it out.
