0.14 Tourney talk

Post Tourney Debrief

Good job everyone on the tourney! We placed in the top 10 clans and we also beat our 0.13 tourney team score (12275 > 10739). Everyone had at least 2 wins. I had two crappy splats, one of them being in Zot:5 but I managed to pull off two successive victories after that. I think best splat goes to HDA who killed himself with his own orb of electricity (87 dam) =P --Flun (talk) 17:15, 28 April 2014 (CEST)

Planned combos

I will probably go for a HOFi or HOGl first, MoogleDan said he wants to do a CeBe. Does anyone want to do a Mi[Gl/Fi] or DEFE? --Flun (talk) 16:42, 9 October 2013 (CEST)

I was thinking that I would start with a DDEE - but I am comfortable starting with MiFi or DEFE - I have had success with both in the past. I am also planning on playing smarter this year, aiming for 3 rune victories at first to try and maximize earlier opportunities for S/B/G related points, and going for extended games later. Flun - if one of those combos work better in the overall plan, just let me know. --sildraith (talk) 21:17, 9 October 2013 (CEST)

Did you want to go extended with a DDEE or DEFE? Maybe you can get a quick MiFi in before. I'll probably go HOGl as a first char then. Of course don't feel like you are forced to play a certain combo, feel free to switch if you are splatting a lot. --Flun (talk) 21:34, 9 October 2013 (CEST)
You are right, I'd rather take those extended. I'll start with MiFi and try for a quick win. --sildraith (talk) 21:48, 9 October 2013 (CEST)
I'm thinking about starting with a SpEn since we don't have it covered yet and can be done quickly. I will probably move on to the new races afterwards. --HilariousDeathArtist
Great - those were the 6th most species wins and 7th most background wins last tourney - and we look to have a good mix of winnable starting combinations. I went ahead and added it to the starting combos listed on the page - change it if you change your mind, etc. Look forward to talking to everyone during the tourney! --sildraith (talk) 17:29, 11 October 2013 (CEST)
Yeah, it's a very different experience when I'm playing as part of a team instead of just doing it on my lonesome. See you on CSZO! By the way, does anyone have any DCSS soundtrack suggestions? --MoogleDan (talk) 18:04, 11 October 2013 (CEST)

Tournament events

Grats CommanderC for our team's first win! I splatted my first guy with 2 runes in the vaults unfortunately =( --Flun 06:42, 12 May 2013 (CEST)

Mmh, I haven't even made it that far. I got to the Lair, established my stash, then got eaten by a hydra. Currently on attempt 5 or so, but it looks promising so far. Props to CommanderC, though. --spudwalt 08:25, 12 May 2013 (CEST)
Scratch that last bit. Pikel just killed me. Take 6... --spudwalt 08:28, 12 May 2013 (CEST)
Grats man! My only promising character died a death that just shouldn't have happened. Oh, and it's your first game too! Dude, you must be really pro.. (or really lucky) --Lokkij 10:23, 12 May 2013 (CEST)
Thanks guys! --CommanderC 14:59, 12 May 2013 (CEST)
Pff... another win! And it's only your second game too! If you continue like this, you'll end up being like theglow, the guy from last tournament who won 18 games and didn't even die once. --Lokkij 22:30, 13 May 2013 (CEST)

Grats Flun on our second win! It's already clear who are the *pros* and who aren't :P --Lokkij 07:55, 13 May 2013 (CEST)

Yep. Yep yep. --spudwalt 08:52, 13 May 2013 (CEST)
Thanks! Also keep at it and I'm sure you can get a win in the tourney. Try an easy combos like MiBe or HOBe - don't worry about overlapping class/background/gods unless you are planning to win multiple times. The first win for each player is the most important because there are a bunch of bonus points for a player's first win.

0.12 tournament

I'd be interested in participating (though I don't know I'd be that helpful -- I've only ever ascended once). Also, idea for a team name: The Ashenzarites (y'know, 'cause Ashenzari's the knowledge god and we gather knowledge into the wiki). --spudwalt 01:01, 23 March 2013 (CET)

If you're interested, grab a slot! If you've won once, you can win again. My first tournament taught me a ton about playing combos I wasn't familiar or comfortable with. As for the name, add it to the list; we'll worry about which we go by when the time comes. --MoogleDan 04:38, 23 March 2013 (CET)
Out of curiosity, about how many times does the average participant successfully ascend over the course of a tournament? It might be slightly masochistic, but I still kinda want to have a benchline to see exactly how much I suck compared to everybody else. --spudwalt 08:16, 23 March 2013 (CET)
Nice to have you on the team =) Here's a list of all the players in the last tournament. This page also has some stats that might be what you are looking for. --Flun 15:48, 23 March 2013 (CET)

I'm having some trouble editing that rc file that we need for the tournament -- I click on the link they have that says "edit rc", but nothing happens. FYI, I usually play on CAO (when I play online at all -- it's a bit laggy for my tastes). --spudwalt 19:40, 2 May 2013 (CEST)

Also, I think I might have a different account; my password wasn't working, so I had to re-register. --spudwalt 19:56, 2 May 2013 (CEST)

Spudwalt, trying playing a 0.12 game on CAO first and then trying to edit the file. Maybe it was not created yet. Do you have a new account name now or are you still using spudwalt?
Yep, I'm still "spudwalt". I'll try again when I get back to my computer. --spudwalt 21:06, 2 May 2013 (CEST)

Me too, I just realised I put the wrong account in that table. I'll put the link to the new account in the table, although it isn't working yet - the server probably hasn't processed it yet. --Lokkij 20:09, 2 May 2013 (CEST)

Lokkij, What is your online profile name? --Flun 21:00, 2 May 2013 (CEST)
My previous name was lordlokkij, and my new one Lokkij - the former registered on CDO and the latter on CSZO. Oh! Is there some kind of test-tournament going on? On the tournament page I'm seeing all this stuff about someone winning the Nemelex' Choice award, and clans gaining points. --Lokkij 21:21, 2 May 2013 (CEST)
Yes there is a test-tourney going on right now, they reset at the beginning of the actualy tourney. Re: your username: for the tournament make sure to use the same character name on all servers. This will ensure that all your games are grouped into the same profile. So for example if you are using Lokkij on CSZO and decide to go back to CDO, make a "Lokkij" account on CDO and play on that. --Flun 21:28, 2 May 2013 (CEST)
Still having trouble. I've played through two 0.12 characters now, and it still doesn't react when I click on the "edit rc" link. --spudwalt 03:39, 3 May 2013 (CEST)
Okay, I tried to edit my 0.12 rc on CAO and it doesn't work either. Hopefully they will get it fixed for the tournament. However, you can always add your team affiliation on the CSZO server and it will work fine. --Flun 04:02, 3 May 2013 (CEST)
Spudwalt, it should work now. I talked to the guy who maintains the server and he missed something in the login script. Log out and back in and you should be good to go. It's working for me now. --Flun 04:15, 3 May 2013 (CEST)
Haaah, there we go. Okay, when do we edit the rc file to include the #TEAMCAPTAIN stuff? --spudwalt 20:57, 3 May 2013 (CEST)
We could do it now if you want, but we have till May 18 to get it working right. --Flun 22:04, 3 May 2013 (CEST)
Okay, I'm pretty sure I've got it edited correctly. See you guys on May 11th! --spudwalt 07:31, 5 May 2013 (CEST)

0.11 tournament

Last tournament's team wiki talk

CDO Webtiles

My prefered server is actually CDO webtiles, but I'm guessing that's not gonna be up in time for the tournament. Does anyone know this for sure? --Lokkij 19:43, 2 May 2013 (CEST)

Yeah, it is not going to be up in time. Are you in Europe? --Flun 20:59, 2 May 2013 (CEST)
Yup, I'm in Europe (Netherlands to be specific). I guess I'll either have to learn playing in console or try to handle the delay that comes with playing in 'merica. Do you think console would be doable? --Lokkij 21:05, 2 May 2013 (CEST)
I play console normally and I have tried playing webtiles. Switching from one to the other takes some getting used to, mainly just to learn all the new representations. However, it is probably less painful than playing with >100ms ping. =P --Flun 21:23, 2 May 2013 (CEST)
Ugh.. I'll need some more practice in console DCSS. I accidentally sacrificed a Storm Dragon Armour to Nemelex. On D:3! I was a minotaur fighter, so it would've been excellent for at least the earlygame. Oh well.. --Lokkij 16:15, 5 May 2013 (CEST)
Don't worry, a plate armour will be just as good, or even better. --CommanderC 21:53, 5 May 2013 (CEST)
Well, I still need to get used to console: I accidentally entered (and in some cases cleared) Snake:1, Orc:1, Elf:1 and almost Slime:1 without even noticing. While it isn't a catastrophe, accidentally entering Hell or some other more dangerous branch without noticing could be, well, rather dangerous --Lokkij 20:10, 11 May 2013 (CEST)

Oh, and another question (about console): what's the hotkey for the religion screen? ^ doesn't work --Lokkij 10:33, 12 May 2013 (CEST)

^ and then SPACE works for me. --CommanderC 14:59, 12 May 2013 (CEST)
That's it, thanks --Lokkij 15:19, 12 May 2013 (CEST)

Nemelex's Choice

Do we know what the Nemelex's Choice combos are this time around? I highly doubt I'll attempt any, but I'm curious all the same. --MoogleDan 04:36, 3 May 2013 (CEST)

PuTTY + Account questions

Okay, so I downloaded PuTTY to play console and set it up and all, but I have to set it up again every time I open PuTTY (the options revert to default). Is there any way to keep my options so I don't have to set it up every time? I also registered on CDO with that, under the name Lokkij (same as on CSZO). If I understand it correctly, my games and scores should show up on the profile page of the already created CSZO account, right? And are the rc files also shared between accounts with the same name? --Lokkij 11:34, 5 May 2013 (CEST)

Putty - In the setup window, you set all your options, and then save the session under a name in the "Load, save or delete a stored session" box under the "Session" tab (the first tab that you see). When you load putty again, you just have to click on that session for it to load everything. You can also change the size of the font under the Window --> Appearance tab. Just make sure to save the configuration again if you change that.
Your tournament profile is here. Looks like you've set up your .rc file correctly and are in the team. You can try playing on different servers, and all the games with your name should appear there. The .rc file is different for each server and each version, but you only need the #TEAMCAPTAIN note on one of the 0.12 .rc files. --Flun 14:18, 5 May 2013 (CEST)
Thanks! That'll save me a lot of time :P --Lokkij 15:04, 5 May 2013 (CEST)

Results & enjoyment

Compared to last year's results, our ranking is disappointing. But the wiki did have some better players that years (or at least less "newbies" like me). However, I must say I enjoyed the tournament a lot. It forced me to play console, which actually was a good thing! It definitely affected my performance negatively, and I don't think I'm going to play DCSS in console ever again, but this experience will greatly help me in other non-graphical roguelikes. I also liked how my (failed) games actually meant something, because they still contributed to my score. How did you guys enjoy it? --Lokkij 17:35, 27 May 2013 (CEST)

We didn't do as well this tournament, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was nice to field a full team from wiki editors (team building right?). CommanderC did really well, and I reached my goal of getting a 3 runer and a 15 runer. I had a conference in the last week so I couldn't play as much. --Flun 19:28, 27 May 2013 (CEST)

As a player who rarely uses autoexplore, I still prefer to play local games, but this year my ping was better (~60 ms), and I enjoyed the tournament more. My biggest mistake was playing that stupid FeFi (I really hate Felids, what was I thinking). The other combos were good and enjoyable. It's very surprising that our clan didn't get any victory with Trog. Probably, we are the only clan ranked in the top 20 that didn't. --CommanderC 21:57, 27 May 2013 (CEST)

This HuBe was supposed to be our Trog win, but sadly I had an unfortunate death in Vaults:5. Also re. FeFi yeah, as a caster that must have been a annoying build. In the tourneys I think melee characters are less time consuming which lets you finish combos faster. On my side the NaAK that I won was tedious, because I pretty much had to stand and fight in every situation that I encountered. I now highly appreciate the ability to run away with faster characters. The HaHu was quite fun to play - I had a full basic resistance set by the end of lair. Pan was a lot of fun basically control teleporting right on top of the runes and teleporting out. Tomb:3 was done under the watchful eye of MoogleDan =) Also, to put our performance in perspective, I organized the teams from Reddit and we placed just above their 2nd best team (The Phantom Mennas). --Flun 22:35, 27 May 2013 (CEST)

I had fun, though not as much fun as I would have had if I'd managed to get a win. Still, I think most of my big deaths were preventable, so I think I'll at least have learned a few things for the next one. I also got three more entries into my personal top 10 runs. I did notice that playing online is a lot laggier than I'm used to -- it was never directly responsible for a horrible death, but I think that last DgEE might have had a chance if I hadn't been feeling time-pressured and tried taking on too many things at once (and it still would've been right down to the wire).
Ah, well. Back to improving the wiki, I guess. --spudwalt 04:10, 28 May 2013 (CEST)

I wish I'd had the time to enjoy this one. I've been in the middle of a really complicated move, and finding time for the tourney was much more stressful than I would've liked. While I was glad that I got at least one win, I did much better last year. I actually had a few other fairly hopeful characters, and I'm still kicking myself for losing my NaTr in Gehenna:7, but oh well; hopefully I won't be moving next year. --MoogleDan 13:44, 28 May 2013 (CEST)

I had not much fun. But ambition to try again and again to get better. No good results for me. I died much more than in version 0.10 or even 0.11 at home. The thumbscrews have been sharpened. Had to learn that it is a very different game if you can't save-scum. Had to learn that I'm much too impatient. Not that I'm not cautious which opponent might be too strong to take on. The frequent CAO disconnections made me mad sometimes and fueled impatience. Further on the tournament was my debut as an online DCSS gamer. And sure I'm still not happy with the player ghost concept and will prefer to play at home in the future. Sorry, guys, if my poor results lowered the tournament team average. -- Bwijn 10:31, 31 May 2013 (CEST)
