Version 0.25: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.
Calls giant grasping roots from deep underground that hold and constrict their victim. The roots will retreat if the victim breaks free or if the caller moves out of view.

Grasping Roots is an ability unique to shambling mangroves and Jorgrun which causes the network of roots running beneath the earth to rise. These roots constrict the target, dealing damage every turn until either the player breaks out of the constriction, the caster is killed, or the effect times out. It is analagous to the player spell Borgnjor's Vile Clutch. Targets flying above or swimming in deep water or lava are immune.

The following enemies cast Grasping Roots:

  • Prior to 0.23, this spell held the target close to the ground, preventing flight, reducing the target's EV and increasing the target's movement delay by 3 auts.
  • Grasping Roots was added in 0.14.
