A barding is a special type of armour designed to cover the lower half of nagas and palentongas. It fills the feet slot in place of boots, which nagas and palentongas cannot wear. Similar to body armour, it offers significantly more AC than ordinary boots, but unlike body armour, it does not offer any GDR, nor is its AC bonus penalized by the wearer's innate Deformed mutation. Bardings impact the wearer's EV slightly (-2 EV; the penalty cannot be reduced by high Armour skill). Unlike a body armour's encumbrance, however, it does not affect spellcasting, stealth, unarmed combat speed, or melee accuracy.
Bardings can be maximally enchanted to +4 using scrolls of enchant armour.
