Reading a scroll of summoning will instantly summon a collection of allied monsters appropriate to the floor you are currently on, similar to the effects of casting Shadow Creatures 2d2 times but with greater duration than the actual spell. These reinforcements can be extremely variable in quality, but the scroll is capable of bringing an immense amount of support to bear instantly and for no cost beyond the scroll itself. As such, they are extremely rare.
History
While this current iteration of the scroll of summoning will be added in 0.12, there was another item know as a scroll of summoning in much earlier versions. These scrolls could be read to create a permanent small abomination ally. In 0.11, these scrolls were renamed to scrolls of unholy creation, correcting the misnomer.
