Ice Beasts are effective for the early and mid game because they deal decent cold damage and have a long duration. They can traverse deep water easily (ice floats, no?), thus they're great in watery environments like the Shoals or the Swamp.
Ice statues have a monster version of 'Summon ice beast'. On the other hand your summoned ice beasts are great for attacking those statues because these pets are immune to ice damage.
