A larger and even uglier goblin, with an even worse temper to match. Many foolish young adventurers have underestimated the danger of crossing a hobgoblin and paid for it with their lives.

“A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.”

Useful Info

Hobgoblins are one of the weakest monsters in the game, but are still a threat to XL 1 characters. They can take down the weaker end of starting characters in a fair fight, especially if they are wielding a weapon. They are found in the very earliest portions of the Dungeon.

Tips & Tricks

  • Hobgoblins are slightly beefier than goblins and kobolds, and hit about as hard. If you have the choice, avoid fighting a goblin as your first enemy - try to get XP from easier prey, first.
  • Watch out for their equipment. A hobgoblin with a weapon is one of the most dangerous enemies you can find on D:1. Unfortunately, if it's wielding a weapon, it's awake and likely to notice you.
  • If you find a mass of hobgoblins and goblins on D:2-4, it's likely that Robin is around.

History

  • In 0.27, all monsters now attack faster and hit harder with weapons. Unlike goblins and kobolds, hobgoblins were not nerfed directly - but they no longer generate with weapons. (Hobgoblins who pick up a weapon, however, are more dangerous.)
