Successfully casting this spell gives the caster the ability to instantaneously release a fireball at a later time. Knowing this spell allows the learner to memorise Fireball for no additional spell levels.

Delayed Fireball is a level 7 Conjurations/Fire Magic spell which grants you the ability to launch a Fireball spell instantaneously and for no cost later on. Only one fireball can be stored at a time. The charged fireball persists indefinitely, even if the spell itself is forgotten.

In spite of the higher spell level, Delayed Fireball only deals as much damage as a standard Fireball spell. This may make the spell seem expensive, but being able to deal significant damage without actually spending a turn doing so can greatly increase your damage output and allows you to blast multiple threats with a single action. Also, memorizing Delayed Fireball will only cost you two spell levels if you already know Fireball.

Tips & Tricks

  • Once you've learned the spell, you should always have one on hand, and you shouldn't be afraid to unleash it. Casting it mid-combat is a terrible idea, so get into the habit of restoring it whenever you're between encounters.
  • It's easy to get past this spell's high MP and food costs, since you'll only be casting it during rests between fights, usually right after generating lots of chunks. In the same vein, don't be afraid to cast it when it has a high failure rate, since you can just wait out the magical contamination.
  • Be aware that the stored fireball is technically a buff, and thus can be dispelled by the breath of a quicksilver dragon or purple draconian, or by quaffing a potion of cancellation.
