A trample attack is a melee attack that not only causes physical damage, but also knocks the victim back one tile; the trampler then occupies the tile previously occupied by its target. This knockback does not take effect if it would move the target into an impassable tile (eg, a wall, tree, lava) or into another monster. Targets smaller in size than the attacker have a greater chance of being knocked back, and almost all monsters that can trample are among the largest monsters in the game.

Tips and Tricks
Pay careful attention to trample-capable creatures when attempting to make an escape via stairways. If one is adjacent to you when you try to use the stairway, it will likely push you off it and then occupy what was to be your escape route. You are left with further injuries, next to an adjacent enemy, and still in need of an escape.
History
Until version 0.14, players in Dragon Form could trample their opponents.
