Lava is a type of terrain found in the Dungeon and many of its branches. If you are flying above it, you get the Lava status effect as a warning. It is impossible to cross lava for most player species, unless you can fly. Items dropped into lava are lost forever.
Other than flying, it's impossible for players to move into lava. Knockback effects, such as Primal Wave or Iskenderun's Mystic Blast, will not push creatures into lava; the tile is treated as a wall instead. However, monsters can fall in if they are confused, or if flung in by Polar Vortex.
For players, having your means of flight expire over lava results in an emergency flight mode; it causes heavy draining (~3% max HP) per turn spent in lava.
Strategy
You can use confusion to your advantage (e.g. Confusing Touch, Mephitic Cloud) by targeting monsters near lava. They may attempt to cross it and fall in, killing them instantly. Keep in mind that this will also destroy their equipment in the process.
Polar Vortex users can lift non-flying monsters into the air and drop them into pools of lava, instantly killing them.
History
- Prior to 0.27, lava would melt the icy enchantments of Ozocubu's Armour and Icemail.
- Prior to 0.20, freezing vapours would melt faster over lava.
- Prior to 0.19, falling into lava meant instant death.
- Prior to 0.17, you could accidentally step into lava while confused.
