Quite useful for stabbers, but some characters may wish to use something without the -2 to damage and accuracy. That being said, being able to generate [[cloud]]s of smoke on demand is occasionally crucial for escaping dangerous ranged opponents, particularly if you're a fast character.

Desirability

The cloak of the Thief is a useful item if you prefer to avoid attention. Halving the intensity of all nearby noise means you won't be attracting many enemies from beyond your line of sight, cutting down on the number of threats you'll have to deal with. Stabbers in particular will appreciate the reduced noise made by any targets they engage in standard combat or that wake up before they can reach them, but other characters relying on particularly noisy spells or equipment, such as hand cannons, Mephitic Cloud, or Arcjolt, will find themselves drawing fewer foes from offscreen. Even particularly loud effects like alarm traps, Fulminant Prism, or monsters with Warning Cry will attract significantly less attention than they otherwise would.

Characters with little regard for subtlety will likely prefer a different cloak or scarf with a more broadly useful property and potentially a higher enchantment, though the cloak of the Thief is still usable as a source of see invisible if you haven't found one yet.

History

  • Prior to 0.32, the cloak of the Thief had a passive ability to generate clouds of smoke when the user was hit instead of the noise-dampening effect. It also had a +2 enchantment, and a -2 slaying penalty.
  • Prior to 0.26, the cloak of the Thief generated clouds by evoking it, rather than automatically when the wearer is injured.
  • Prior to 0.15, this cloak only penalized damage (-3), not accuracy, and provided a slightly higher stealth bonus.
  • Prior to 0.12, this cloak provided small bonuses to EV and dexterity, as well as evocable invisibility and levitation, but lacked the fog effect.
  • Prior to 0.10, the -3 damage slaying penalty was much more severe, as slaying bonuses and penalties were multiplied by your skills.
