A fearsome hunting dog, lithe and alert. Its master must be long gone, for it looks disheveled, and has a lean and hungry look.

"A traveler, by the faithful hound, Half-buried in the snow was found, Still grasping in his hand of ice That banner with the strange device, Excelsior!"

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, "Excelsior"

Useful Info

Hounds are the second sorts of canines you are likely to encounter. Although bigger and stronger than jackals, they do not travel in packs, and the fact that they have clean corpses and decent early-game experience values makes them a much more welcome sight. They can be found in the early portions of the Dungeon, and the Lair.

Tips & Tricks

A hound can manage to chew up a fragile caster, but that's only if you let it get close enough to hit you. They're negligible threats at best to anything wearing even moderate armor.
