A large, fleshy mushroom that wanders slowly around the dungeon. It is both innately curious and incredibly shy, pursuing the objects of its curiosity only when out of sight. Noxious spores drift around its cap.
“Telimena, wearied with the prolonged wrangling, wanted to go out into the fresh air, but sought a partner. She took a little basket from the peg. “Gentlemen, I see that you wish to remain within doors,” she said, wrapping around her head a red cashmere shawl, “but I am going for mushrooms: follow me who will!” Under one arm she took the little daughter of the Chamberlain, with the other she raised her skirt up to her ankles. Thaddeus silently hastened after her—to seek mushrooms!” |
Useful Info
Wandering mushrooms initially appear to be stationary. Once you move out of sight, wandering mushrooms will stalk you, staying just beyond vision range. This means they are quite likely to be in your way if you need to retreat from other, more serious threats.
Despite their apparently nonthreatening (but rather creepy) behavior, they can be surprising difficult to kill in melee. Their attacks release clouds of confusing spores, and they hit hard. Wandering mushrooms become weaker each time they attack, losing 1 HD per attack (and dying at 0 HD), but that's small consolation if you are fleeing something dangerous and find yourself confused and missing a chunk of hit points. They are found near Fedhas Madash altars, and can be summoned by players through Fedhas' Evolution ability and by monsters through the Summon Mushrooms spell.
Tips & Tricks
- Stay safe and keep your retreat paths open by killing them when you first see them.
- It's very easy to isolate them from other monsters simply by moving away from it to a part of the Dungeon you've already cleared. Kill any monsters that pursue you, then return to kill the mushroom.
- Fight them at range if at all possible; anyone can kill one in perfect safety using a spear, even without training. Use an amulet of clarity if you must melee it.
- You probably don't want to polymorph it, as wandering mushrooms typically turn into oklob plants.
History
In 0.17, they will no longer spawn as hostile monsters but you can make them through Fedhas.
