Version 0.11: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

Although spiders are generally considered the most dangerous of Crawl's invertebrates, there are a number of deadly insects found in the Dungeon as well. Their abilities vary greatly by order, but the majority of them share a weakness to poison. They can be found everywhere except the extended end-game.

All insects leave zombifiable corpses, but none leave skeletons, meaning that players with a cursed/distortion/vampiric blunt weapon using Animate Skeleton for food cannot conveniently eat them.

Ants

  • a Worker ant.png Worker ant - Poisonous critters that seek out puny adventurers to feast upon.
  • a Soldier ant.png Soldier ant - The sort of giant ant that can chomp through armour and shake off stab wounds. Extra poisonous!
  • a Queen ant.png Queen ant - Although a heavy hitter in melee, her slow speed makes her much less intimidating than her minions.
  • a Ant larva.png Ant larva - About as threatening as a goblin with three limbs missing.

Bees & Wasps

  • k Killer bee.png Killer bee - Painful alone and deadly in swarms, these pack hunters are a menace to the unprepared.
  • k Bumblebee.png Bumblebee - A bigger bee with a much less terrifying history of player deaths.
  • k Queen bee.png Queen bee - Although extremely venomous, their lack of maneuverability makes them easy to deal with.
  • y Yellow wasp.png Yellow wasp - Although slower than killer bees, their stings slow and paralyse their victims.
  • y Red wasp.png Red wasp - An oversized yellow wasp dyed red in the blood of its victims.

Beetles

  • B Goliath beetle.png Goliath beetle - Slow enough for even nagas to kite, but durable enough to make you wonder if it's worth the effort.
  • B Boring beetle.png Boring beetle - Beefy, but easily avoided. They tend to turn any floor with rock walls to swiss cheese if left around long enough.
  • B Boulder beetle.png Boulder beetle - These tanks normally lumber along slowly, but they can suddenly start rolling at break-neck speed.

Butterflies & Moths

  • b Butterfly.png Butterfly - Harmless and pretty and occasionally in the way.
  • y Moth of wrath.png Moth of wrath - These fluttering nuisances are capable of mystically enraging anything they come across.
  • y Ghost moth.png Ghost moth - Invisible psychic predators with debilitating poisons.

History

0.12 will introduce moths of suppression and remove bumblebees.
