Reading a scroll of blinking causes you to blink to a square of your choosing within your line of sight with perfect accuracy, as though you'd cast Controlled Blink. It induces light magic contamination, though not enough to be harmful unless you're already contaminated from another source or use several in rapid succession. The selected square must be visible, not deep water or lava, monster-free, and cannot be behind a translucent wall. The scroll is consumed when read.

These scrolls are one of the most reliable means of escape in the game, but they are fairly rare. Only consider using them after ruling out your other means of escape, and try not to carry too many on yourself at a time to minimize their risk of destruction by fire.

Exceptions

These scrolls are not infallible. The following things will interfere with their use:

  • Wearing an amulet of stasis or wearing/wielding any item with the TELE- intrinsic will cause your blink to fail.
  • Areas with -cTele (Labyrinths, Elven Halls:3, etc.) will replace the scroll of blinking effect with that of a Blink spell (random tile selection). Unlike the spell, this blink will NOT be semi-controlled.
  • In the Abyss, blinking is even more unreliable. A scroll of blinking has a 2/3 chance of outright failure:
"The power of the Abyss keeps you in your place!"
  • You cannot read scrolls of blinking while silenced, be it from your own silence or that of an enemy such as Mennas or a silent spectre.
  • Reading a scroll of blinking while confused will cause it to function as a scroll of random uselessness.
  • Attempting to blink while constricted may fail, depending on whether or not you succeed on an escape attempt that turn.

History

Prior to 0.11, reading a scroll of blinking caused no magic contamination and would always escape from constriction.
