Latest revision as of 18:19, 3 November 2025

Version 0.33: This article is up to date for the latest stable release of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.

In the Dungeon, there are many different kinds of normal and magical items to be found and used. Some are good, others are bad. Some need to be identified.

Basic item types

Item classification

The colour of an item in inventory enhances the item's description as follows:

  • Grey: is otherwise unnotable
  • Dark Grey: is useless or unusable/melded
  • White: is a randart
  • Light Cyan: is an unrand or evocable that's not dangerous
  • Blue: is an unidentified magical item (including: scrolls/potions/magical staves/jewellery, equipment with an enchantment or ego)
  • Green: has an enchantment and/or ego or is a magical staff
  • Red: is purely harmful, or discouraged by your god
  • Bright Green: is uncursed and equipped
  • Bright Red: is cursed and equipped
  • Yellow: can help escape from or survive emergencies (teleport, healing, etc.)
  • Cyan: is rare and beneficial
  • Magenta: is dangerous to use but potentially useful
  • Light Magenta: is a Rune or the Orb of Zot

These colours can be changed with the menu_colour option.

Properties

Items are most often found on the ground. They can also be bought in a shop, found equipped on monsters, generated when killing certain monsters, granted by a scroll of acquirement, or gifted by your god.

You can pick up items on your tile with g and drop them with d. Picking up items takes 1 turn regardless of the amount of items picked up, dropping them takes 1 turn per item stack.

Items in your inventory cannot be destroyed or taken by external sources, with the sole exception of Maurice. If an item drops into lava, or drops into deep water if you're not a naturally amphibious species (even if you're in an amphibious form), it is destroyed.

Potions/scrolls/wands/throwables of the same type will stack into the same inventory slot and cannot be separated. For all practical purposes, there is no stack limit.

All items except potions and scrolls are either identified when stepping on its tile (equipment), or on sight (other items). Potions and scrolls can be identified if: consumed, starting with one, affected by a scroll of identify, bought in a non-antique shop, found in certain special vaults, or through Ashenzari.

Valid monsters are allowed to use weapons, throwables, armour, jewellery, and wands. They can pick up items that have not been seen by the player; only Maurice can pick up seen items. Monsters will use wands and throwables without consuming charges or ammo, except for throwing nets.
