Version 0.11: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

Scrolls provide more or less useful magical effects for those who read them. Scrolls can be found throughout the Dungeon as randomly generated loot or can be bought in appropriate shops.

Unlike certain other roguelikes, in Crawl every character is able to read by default. The "blurry vision" mutation, among other effects, may cause your character to fail reading a scroll properly. The chance to fail reading a scroll increases by 20% for every level of the mutation. Scrolls can't be read when berserked or silenced. When reading while confused any scroll will behave like a scroll of random uselessness (except for a Scroll of paper, back when it still existed).

Scrolls are used up when read. Furthermore they are subject to outright destruction by the effects of fire and flames. Conservation protects scrolls in your inventory from catching fire.

By reading scrolls it is possible to exercise spellcasting up to level 1.
