Useful Info

An apis is a rare holy yak-type monster. They are mostly restricted to the holy Pandemonium level and Ziggurat floors, though they can also be found in a holy-themed Shoals:4 vault. They behave like all yaks, moving into melee range and hitting surprisingly hard with their holy horns (which are especially dangerous to undead or demonspawn characters).

Most pressingly, they naturally emanate an aura which doubles the current HP of any nearby monster, except themselves or other apis; even evil creatures are buffed. Thankfully, the status will go away and return them to their normal HP when the apis is killed or leaves their line of sight.

Tips & Tricks

  • Apis should be treated as priority targets, as leaving them alive means you have to spend twice as long dealing with other nearby monsters.
  • In melee, think of them as death yaks but stronger, particularly if you're vulnerable to holy damage.

Trivia

The apis was a sacred bull worshiped in ancient Egypt.

History

  • Prior to 0.33, apis did not have an aura of doubled health. They also dealt slightly less damage (40) and had slightly more health.
  • In 0.31, apis can now appear in a holy-themed Shoals:4 vault.
  • Prior to 0.15, Elyvilon could punish the player for killing an apis by inflicting irresistible but temporary weakness. Also, hostile apis could turn neutral if the player worshipped a good god and was sufficiently pious.
  • In 0.14, apis were supposed to appear in the Enchanted Forest.
  • Prior to 0.13, killing an apis did not trigger Elyvilon's wrath.
