Version 0.34: This article is up to date for the latest stable release of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
It sometimes constricts those it attacks with vines. (1/2 chance, 2-4 damage).

The entangling brand, exclusive to Polearms, does the following:

  • 50% chance to constrict the enemy with 2d2 base damage.

You may constrict only 1 enemy at a time, and can move while they remain entangled, but must stay within reach-range. You may entangle enemies over deep water and lava.

Switching weapons ends the entanglement.

Sources

Entangling can only generate and exist on polearms. It is available through both random generation and through a scroll of brand weapon.

Strategy

Constriction reduces the target's EV by 10 and restricts movement, so entangling is more than 2-4 damage per turn.

Entangling synergizes with allies, since they'll also get to benefit from constriction's -10 EV penalty. It can also be strong on casters or hybrid characters, as constriction can be maintained even when casting spells or doing other actions - it's essentially Borgnjor's Vile Clutch on a melee weapon.

History

  • Entangling was introduced, along with the other weapon-type-specific brands, in 0.34.
