The most obvious use for a wand of disintegration is to deal a significant chunk of untyped damage to a single monster (assuming that you manage to overcome the target's magic resistance). A monster killed in this manner will explode, scattering several chunks and blood splatters around the area (dragons are immune to this effect, and may or may not leave a corpse as normal). One can also use it to remove doors, iron grates, trees, orcish idols, most kinds of statues, and (rock or slime) walls.
Followers of Gozag Ym Sagoz will receive a spray of single gold coins on several nearby tiles instead of a shower of meat chunks and blood.
Strategy
- If you want to prevent a horde of enemies from attacking you all at once, particularly when dealing with torment or smite-targeted attacks, you can use a wand of disintegration to dig a short, sharply turning tunnel into a block of rock wall, creating a 1-tile line of sight. Carve out two tiles, connected diagonally, and then carve out a third tile, connected diagonally in the other direction. Only one enemy will be able to reach (or even see) you. Bear in mind that doing this takes more time than you may have available, so consider setting this up before starting the battle. Also, unless you can teleport away, it is impossible to escape this arrangement without further digging. It also makes for an excellent hiding place if you need to rest up between battles; it is extremely unlikely that enemies will find you unless they were already aware of you when you ducked inside.

- Beogh may smite those who destroy his orcish idols with this wand. He will be particularly harsh on orcs who do so.
- A wand of digging is better suited to chewing through walls, as it destroys several tiles of wall at a time. However, if you only need to destroy a single tile to enter a vault, or have plenty of time and charges, the wand of disintegration will get the job done.
- It can be particularly effective at taking out low-HD, high-threat monsters such as boggarts and Sonja.
History
Prior to 0.15, orange crystal statues and silver statues could be destroyed instantly through use of a wand of disintegration.
Prior to 0.6, zapped creatures were simply reduced to nothingness.
