Bear in mind that the benefits of the [[Armour skill]] depend upon the base AC of the armour you're wearing, and that GDR is unaffected by Armour skill. It is a waste of experience to train it if you don't intend to find sturdier armour down the line. Focus on Dodging instead.

Armour Class 3
Encumbrance rating 4
Maximum Enchantment +3

Time to Wear 5

A suit made from layers of tanned animal hide, this light armour provides basic protection with almost no hindrance to elaborate gestures or swift, stealthy movement.

Leather armour is the lightest common body armour, except for robes. It offers 1 more AC than a robe, at a slight encumbrance penalty. Dodgers and casters may prefer leather over a plain robe.

Desirability

Leather armour is a bland piece of armour. Robes are more likely to have useful egos, while lighter dragon scales (like acid or swamp) offer far more AC for relatively little encumbrance. However, it is useful in a few situations:

  • For an early EV-reliant character, before you find a superior alternative, this is often better than a plain robe. In exchange for 1 point of EV, you will get at least 1 more AC.
  • Leather armour is very common, meaning that well-enchanted and artefact leather armours are reasonable to come across. A +3 leather armour of fire resistance is comparable to the aforementioned dragon armours, while a good artefact (such as the salamander hide armour) might be worth wearing.

Note that a plain +0 leather armour is completely outclassed by both troll leather armour and steam dragon scales.
