Shadows will be revamped in [[0.13]]. They will be able to turn invisible for brief periods of time. While invisible, movement is increased and their attacks will automatically hit and count as a stab (250% normal damage). See [http://git.develz.org/?p=crawl.git;a=commit;h=554d76ad9dfeac8cecd06655366621c344ab80a0 this commit] for more info.

See invisible
A wisp of unliving shadow, slipping in and out of the darkness of the dungeon. It moves swiftly and silently from one pool of shade to another, striking unerringly from the blind spots of those who cannot see it.

Useful Info

Shadows are undead, blue-black creatures capable of becoming briefly invisible, increasing their movement speed as well. If they attack while invisible, they automatically hit you with a stabbing attack that deals 250% normal damage. They can be found in the middle floors of the Dungeon, as well as the Crypt and the Hells (particularly Tartarus). They also show up as the result of some death curses.

Tips & Tricks

  • Shadows can deal extreme amounts of damage, considering how early in the game you encounter them. If you see one approaching, pop on a ring of see invisible immediately if you have on available. If not, hitting the thing with Corona will prevent it from going invisible. If no source of negating their invisibility is available, hit them hard and fast while you can still see them.
    • Two notables method for negating invisibility that do not work are Sticky Flame (shadows are insubstantial) and fighting in shallow water (they levitate).

History

Prior to 0.13, shadows were unable to go invisible, and damaged your strength when they attacked.
