Useful Info
Colossal amoeba are dead-serious single-celled organisms found in the Slime Pits. Much like marrowcuda found in early D, they can create copies of themselves with melee attacks (capped at 8 at a time), but unlike those earlygame fish, they live in wide-open floors lined with acidic walls. They also have very high health and an extra dragging attack.
Tips & Tricks
- Their threat level correspond much more dramatically to your defenses than many other monsters, as their
AF_SWARMbranded attacks have to make it past your AC, EV, and SH to summon at all. Characters with poor EV and no SH are especially likely to see many spawn in quickly, though characters with poor AC may find smaller amoeba counts to be plenty dangerous alrready.- Their dependency on reaching melee to summon means pre-emptively using ranged attacks and high-level spells before they can start splitting will help a fair bit, and Translocations can prevent them from summoning at all.
- Other high-tier slimes may displace the original as one melees it- as with most summoners, keeping track of the original amoeba to get rid of the summons is key.
- Monsters on average have worse defenses than the player, so they're much more likely to start splitting off attacking one's allies than trying to roll successfully against an endgame character's reasonable defenses. Spells like Summon Cactus Giant, Animate Dead, and Splinterfrost Shell can end up producing a lot of amoeba very quickly- breaking out Evocations and Invocations early and promptly for characters reliant on allies like these is for the best.
History
- Colossal amoeba were added in 0.34, as a callback to the long-removed giant amoeba.
