A suit made entirely out of tiny metal rings. Offering strong protection against weapons, claws and carnassials, chain mail hinders quick and stealthy movement. |
Chain mail is one of the heavier normal armours you can acquire, providing substantial defense but at a heavy cost to evasion.
It is one of two armours able to get the ponderousness ego.
Desirability
Chain mail can be a decent option for heavy melee brutes - at least in the early game. Early on, chain mail can provide more overall defense than a plate armour, and it's more common than plate. But as you gain more strength and/or Armour skill, the plate armour will likely come out ahead. Dodgers and casters will likely find this armour too heavy to bother with.
In general, it's not worth wearing in the long run, unless you get an awesome randart.
History
- Prior to 0.30, chain mail had an encumbrance rating of 15. It also was unable to have the ponderousness ego.
- Prior to 0.13, chain mail had 7 base AC.
- Prior to 0.10, it had 6 base AC.
The increases in AC have been due to the removal of banded mail, and later, of splint mail.
