A malevolent and dangerous little sprite. Although physically unprepossessing, boggarts can rapidly summon large numbers of creatures, including more boggarts, to do their perverse bidding. These troublesome pests can also cloud one's mind and render themselves unseen.
"He thinks every bush a boggart." -John Ray, _A Compleat Collection of English Proverbs_. 1768. "A BOGGART intruded himself, upon what pretext or by what authority is unknown, into the house of a quiet, inoffensive, and laborious farmer; and, when once it had taken possession it disputed the right of domicile with the legal mortal tenant, in a very unneighbourly and arbitrary manner. In particular, it seemed to have a great aversion to children. As there is no point on which a parent feels more acutely than that of the maltreatment of his offspring, the feelings of the father and more particularly of his good dame, were daily, ay, and nightly, harrowed up by the malice of this malignant and invisible boggart." -C.J.T., _Folk-lore and Legends: English_ 1890. |
Useful Info
Boggarts are extremely fragile creatures that are nonetheless capable of surprising a careless character by turning invisible and summoning hordes of creatures. They are occasionally found in the later portions of the Dungeon, as well as in the Vaults.

Tips & Tricks
You don't need anything more than innate MR to deal with a boggart's Hexes: at HD 2, they'll rarely if ever get through. Their summons are the real danger, as they can very quickly overwhelm an unprepared character.
They have low HP and MR, so zapping or casting disintegration, fireball, paralyze, enslavement, confusion, and polymorph are all safe options. Just make sure to disable them quickly, as it only takes a few rounds for them to summon massive amounts of dangerous reinforcements. See invisible is also useful, as they tend to turn invisible at the start of a fight.
