A ring that either protects its wearer from harm or makes them more vulnerable to injury, depending on its degree of enchantment. |
A +4 or -4 ring of protection affects the AC of the wearer. If the enchantment is negative, the ring is normally cursed. Even if you've identified rings of protection in general, you won't know if the enchantment is positive or negative until after you've put it on.
Desirability
All characters are going to want more AC, but sacrificing a ring slot for it may or may not be a good idea. Unlike most amulets, rings take effect immediately, so you can quickly switch between them at need. Rings of protection are more likely to be useful for characters with low AC; mechanically, there is a much larger difference between 5 and 9 AC compared to 25 and 29. In particular, characters that cannot wear some or all types of armour (spriggans, ogres, trolls, octopodes, felids) will appreciate having a ring of protection.
History
- Prior to 0.25 enchantments were random values between 1 and 6 (positive and negative).
