An animal skin is a piece of armour that is functionally identical to a robe: with 2 base AC and no encumbrance.
Animal skins are not normally generated with egos outside of a few special vaults, such as in Ice caves.
Desirability
It is functionally identical to a robe, although less likely to have an ego. This item exists as flavour for Berserkers and some enemies (such as spriggan berserkers) where wearing robes would be less thematic.
Berserkers, with their high strength and melee focus, will want to switch to a heavier armour almost immediately. For other characters, a +0 animal skin is +0 robe; leather armour, light dragon scales, or a robe with an ego are better options. If you find a +2 animal skin from a unique, it'll be worth using over plain robes/leather armour.
