Crystal plate armour is one of the heaviest body armours available, tied with gold dragon scales. It has the highest base AC in the game, but with severe encumbrance penalties. It is very rare.
Strategy
For a strong, melee brute, crystal plate is one of the ideal endgame armours. Some characters may prefer gold dragon scales' resistances, but GDS is similarly rare until you find golden dragons to slay. For other characters, the encumbrance is high - even extended characters will have trouble casting in it.
But, by the time you usually find crystal plate, alternatives exist. You may have a great artefact armour, or a highly enchanted set of a 'lesser' armour (plate armour, etc.) - these can outperform a +0 crystal plate armour. Ending the game with regular plate armour is perfectly reasonable.
History
