Crystal plate armour is one of the heaviest body armours available, tied with gold dragon scales. It has the highest base AC in the game, but with severe encumbrance penalties. It is very rare.
Strategy
For a strong, melee brute, crystal plate is one of the ideal endgame armours. Some characters may prefer gold dragon scales' resistances, but GDS is similarly rare until you find golden dragons to slay.
A +0 crystal plate armour isn't spectacularly good. If you already had a great randart or highly enchanted set of a 'lesser' armour (plate armour, etc.), you may want to use that over a lowly enchanted set of plate.
History
