Crystal plate armour is one of the heaviest body armours available, tied with gold dragon scales. It has the highest base AC in the game, but with severe encumbrance penalties. It is very rare.
Strategy
For a strong, melee brute, crystal plate is one of the ideal endgame armours. Some characters may prefer gold dragon scales' resistances, but GDS is similarly rare until you find golden dragons to slay.
But by the time you find crystal plate, you may have found a great artefact armour, or have a highly enchanted set of a 'lesser' armour (plate armour, etc.). A +0 crystal plate armour isn't spectacularly good; ending the game with a +10 plate armour of fire resistance or so is perfectly reasonable.
History
- Prior to 0.14, the crystal plate armour's encumbrance rating was 24.
- Prior to 0.10, crystal plate armour was known as crystal plate mail.
