Useful Info

Mummies are the preserved corpses of the dead, raised by Necromancy for various reasons. They are unique in that they give death curses to you upon death. Although more powerful mummies have devastating death curses, common mummies merely curse a single piece of equipment in your inventory. Apart from that, they have a decent attack which low-level characters should watch out for, but they move slowly and have meager durability. They can be found in the Ossuary, the Tomb, and certain undead-themed vaults.

Tips & Tricks

  • Mummies are vulnerable to fire and holy wrath weapons, but you may wish to avoid killing them to avoid the curse. If you can get a confused or neutral monster to kill the mummy for you, however, that will spare you the curse (but you'll get no experience for the kill).
  • Don't waste a scroll of remove curse removing only one cursed item. If there are multiple mummies around, kill them all and then clean yourself of all curses with a single scroll. If any unequipped items in your inventory were cursed, wear them first. You can even run back to your stash and experiment with some unidentified loot; if any of it's cursed, you can get it cleansed along with whatever the mummy zapped.
  • Worshippers of Ashenzari are immune to common mummy death curses, so they can kill them with impunity. This has no effect on the death curses of more powerful mummies.
  • Mummies are slow enough that you can walk them upstairs and outrun them, leaving them on a cleared level. Be aware that you may encounter them again if you head back up to retrieve items from your stash (though you can just run away from them again).

History

Prior to 0.15, allowing allied or enslaved creatures to kill mummies would spare you from the death curse.
