Whether this ring is useful or not is largely situational, although life protection is less broadly useful than fire or cold resistance. Ghoul and mummy charcters can ignore these rings entirely as they are immune to negative energy by nature; vampires may be able to use one if they get ambushed by an enemy with negative energy attacks while Alive, but they're better off switching to Bloodless in areas where negative energy is a common hazard.

For most of a 3-rune game, negative energy isn't common. You may come across occasional enemies with negative damage, such as jorogumos, deep elf death mages or shadow dragons, so it's nice to keep a source of rN+ handy.

As many draining attacks are subject to EV, very agile characters will not generally need much negative energy resistance. However, high-AC, low-EV characters taking on Vault:5's shadow dragons or Elf:3's deep elf death mages may wish to have a few ranks of rN in order to avoid taking heavy damage and the debilitating skill debuffs that accompany draining attacks. Negative energy resistance is also very important to have in areas where torment is common (such as the Tomb and the Hells).

In extended, negative energy and torment are much more common; having good amounts of rN+ is more important. However, dedicating an entire ring slot to a single source of rN+ isn't the greatest. Note that The Shining One provides rN+++ to pious followers, making this ring redundant.

A ring that protects the life-force of its wearer from negative energy, making them partially immune to the draining effects of undead and necromantic magic.

A ring of positive energy provides one level of negative energy resistance (rN+), protecting its wearer from draining attacks and necromantic magic.

Desirability

For most of a 3-rune game, negative energy isn't common. You may come across occasional enemies with negative damage, such as jorogumos, deep elf death mages or shadow dragons, so it's nice to keep a source of rN+ handy.

In extended, negative energy and torment are much more common; having good amounts of rN+ is more important. However, dedicating an entire ring slot to a single source of rN+ isn't the greatest. Note that The Shining One provides rN+++ to pious followers, making this ring redundant.
