Fire dragon scales are a relatively light suit of body armour which provides reasonable physical defense, a bearable encumbrance rating, and excellent fire resistance (rF++). However, it also penalizes the wearer with one rank of cold vulnerability. You can obtain this by random chance by killing a fire dragon.
Desirability
Many players consider this the best general-purpose armour: it provides almost as much protection as plate armour, while having an encumbrance rating that will still allow spellcasting. The rF++ it provides is very useful, and the rC- is usually bearable given that cold attacks are generally rarer and less damaging than fire attacks, with a few notable exceptions. Still, it is often best to wait until you have at least one source of cold resistance before wearing fire dragon scales, as taking an extra 50% from cold attacks can be quite dangerous.
