Whether this ring is useful or not is largely situational, although life protection is decidedly less useful than fire or cold resistance. As most draining attacks are subject to EV, very agile characters will not generally need much negative energy resistance. However, high-AC, low-EV characters taking on the shadow dragon-heavy Vault:5 will usually want at least two levels of life protection, since they can otherwise expect to come out of that place 1-2 experience levels below where they began if a dragon manages to pin him down for too long.

A ring that protects the life-force of its wearer from negative energy, making them partially immune to the draining effects of undead and necromantic magic.

A ring of positive energy provides one level of negative energy resistance (rN+), protecting its wearer from draining attacks and necromantic magic.

Desirability

For most of a 3-rune game, negative energy isn't common. You may come across occasional enemies with negative damage, such as jorogumos, deep elf death mages or shadow dragons, so it's nice to keep a source of rN+ handy.

In extended, negative energy and torment are much more common; having good amounts of rN+ is more important. However, dedicating an entire ring slot to a single source of rN+ isn't the greatest. Note that The Shining One provides rN+++ to pious followers, making this ring redundant.
