Version 0.15: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

Scrolls provide (mostly) useful magical effects for those who read them, essentially functioning as one-shot spells on demand. Scrolls can be found throughout the Dungeon as randomly generated loot or can be bought in appropriate shops.

Unlike certain other roguelikes, in Crawl every character is able to read by default (although the Blurry Vision mutation may cause your character to fail when attempting to do so; +20% failure rate per rank of the mutation). Scrolls cannot be read when berserk or silenced. Reading while confused will cause all scrolls to behave like scrolls of random uselessness.

Scrolls are used up when they take effect. If you have already identified a scroll and accidentally read it, you may cancel the action by pressing escape. (NOTE: This does not work with scrolls of acquirement!)
