A talisman charged with arcane forces of unknown provenance, to be worn as jewellery on a finger.
"A ring of gold and a milk-white dove -Oscar Wilde, "Chanson". 1881. |
A ring is a type of jewellery. Characters may wear one ring on each hand, paw, or tentacle; this usually limits you to two rings at a time, but octopodes may wear eight, and followers of Ru who have sacrificed their hand can only wear one ring. The artefact macabre finger necklace grants one additional ring slot. Despite their additional limbs, formicids are still limited to two ring slots.
Rings have the advantage of only requiring 0.5 auts to remove or put on, letting characters change their resistances on the fly.
Certain detrimental rings always generate cursed; all rings that are purely harmful (attention, teleportation) are always cursed, while the stat-boosting rings (strength, intelligence, dexterity, slaying, protection, evasion) are always cursed if their bonus is negative. Other rings may or may not be cursed, as per usual.
There are 21 different base types of rings; random artefact rings each use one type of base ring when generated, but will have one or more additional properties. For a list of preset artefect rings, see List of unrands:
