Useful Info
Jellies are extremely obnoxious opponents which introduce the player to the concept of corrosion. Each time you attack a jelly, there is a chance it will permanently weaken the damage enchantment of your weapon, down to a minimum of -5. Likewise, each time a jelly attacks you, each piece of armour you wear is subject to a similar risk of corrosion. These attacks also deal heavy acid damage, though you can reduce this significantly by filling as many armour slots as you can, especially the cloak.
Jellies also consume any ammo fired at them, items they come across, or doors they pass through while wandering the Dungeon. Doing so heals them, and if they consume enough items they'll split, creating a second identical jelly. Although fairly weak, these opponents can destroy valuable items and permanently weaken your equipment.
Tips & Tricks
- When you hear 'a slurping noise', it means a jelly has just eaten something. If possible, collect any loose items you come across on those floors to ensure that it doesn't lead to more jellies. This is especially important if kobolds or centaurs have littered a room with individual darts or arrows. Luckily, they can't eat stones, large rocks, or artefacts.
- While jellies will not attack other living monsters, they will happily devour the corpses of the fallen along with whatever they were carrying. Try to kill the jelly before taking out anything else if you have any choice in the matter.
- If at all possible, you should fight jellies using ranged attacks to avoid their acid. While they will simply consume ammunition fired into it, they cannot eat spell projectiles; magic is far and away the best means of dealing with them (including summons). Failing that, characters lacking magic can simply throw common stones or large rocks at the jelly, at the very least softening them up before engaging in melee.
- Bear in mind that sling bullets can be eaten. Sling users should quiver stones before attacking.
- Artefact weapons and armour are immune to corrosion, as are weapons or armour with a +5 or higher enchantment level (for weapons, only the damage enchantment counts).
- If you lack alternatives, you can simply wield a trash weapon you don't care about, march right up, and pound the thing. Their HP, AC, and EV are not too intimidating, but consider swapping out any useful ego armour you don't want to risk damaging.
- Wearing an amulet of resist corrosion or a source of preservation will greatly reduce the chance of corrosion. Crystal plate mail and dwarven equipment also resist corrosion most of the time. Bear in mind that these only reduce the chance, and are not guaranteed to save your gear.
History
Prior to 0.13, jellies were more durable and hit harder, but only had speed 9.
