Upon reading a scroll of brand weapon, you will be asked to choose a non-artefact weapon from your inventory to receive a permanent, randomly-selected brand. This will also replace any brand currently on the targeted weapon, if any.

Reading a scroll of brand weapon will allow you to immediately and irrevocably change the brand on one weapon currently in your inventory. You may choose the weapon to target, but it cannot affect artefacts. Pressing Escape allows you to safely cancel the scroll's effect, but will still consume the scroll. The exact impact of this scroll varies based on the nature of the weapon you choose:

If you have already identified the scroll, you may cancel the process by pressing Esc without consuming it.

The brand you receive depends on the following:
Unbranded weapons will be given the vorpal brand, modestly raising damage against any opponent. Doing so generates a loud noise.

Unbranded weapons under the effect of most temporary brands (acquired through spells such as Fire Brand or Lethal Infusion, or through drawing a Blade card) have the brand permanently affixed. Depending on the temporary brand in question, you will then be hit with the following effects:
+
Melee Weapons
*Flame/Flaming: Inner Flame explosion

*Flaming: 19%
*Frost/Freezing: Ozocubu's Refrigeration

*Freezing:19%

The following temporary brands cannot be affixed this way, and attempting to do so is punished as follows:

Most branded weapons will have their current brand replaced with one of the following brands, with some new brands being more common than others. Doing so will be accompanied by an appropriate elemental backlash:
+
*the new brand is identical to the weapon's former brand;
*Flaming/Flame: 30/148 (20%)
+
*your god disapproves of the selected brand.
*Freezing/Frost: 30/148 (20%)

*Venom: 20/148 (13.5%)

*Draining: 15/148 (10%)

*Vorpal: 15/148 (10%)

*Electrocution: 15/148 (10%)

*Protection/Evasion: 12/148 (8%)

*Vampiric: 8/148 (5.5%)

*Chaos: 3/148 (2%)

If protection or evasion are selected, the only backlash will be the same loud noise produced by the vorpal brand.

*Prior to 0.15, rebranding a distortion weapon would trigger a distortion unwield effect. Also, the scroll would automatically affect your wielded weapon, rather than letting you choose a target.
 +
*Prior to 0.14, you could control which brand you received to some extent: any temporary brand your wielded weapon held upon reading would be made permanent. Additionally, any time you gave your weapon one of the following brands, you would receive the following effect:
 +
**Flame/Flaming: Inner Flame explosion centered on reader
 +
**Frost/Freezing: Ozocubu's Refrigeration
 +
**Draining/Vampiricism: Moderate draining to the reader
 +
**Venom: Olgreb's Toxic Radiance
 +
**Electrocution: Orb of Electrocution centered on reader
 +
**Chaos: Chaos-branded explosion

*:The following temporary brands could not be affixed this way, and attempting to do so was punished as follows:
 +
**Pain: Torment
 +
**Distortion: A random Translocations miscast effect (possibly including banishment)
 +
**Antimagic: Drains all your MP

*The scroll of brand weapon was added in 0.13, replacing the scroll of vorpalise weapon.

Although there is no way to know exactly which brand will be selected, you will always receive a new brand, and will never receive a brand your god does not approve of; the game will simply re-run the test until an appropriate brand is selected. Also, weapons of holy wrath cannot be affected in this way, and attempting to do so will result in a blast of cleansing flame. Rebranding a distortion weapon is allowed, but doing so will still produce the negative effects of unwielding a distortion weapon.

A scroll that imbues a weapon with a random brand, such as flame, freezing, or venom. Any existing brand will be replaced. Artefacts cannot be branded in this way.

Upon reading a scroll of brand weapon, you will be asked to choose a non-artefact weapon from your inventory to receive a permanent, randomly-selected brand. This will also replace any brand currently on the targeted weapon, if any.

If you have already identified the scroll, you may cancel the process by pressing Esc without consuming it.

The brand you receive depends on the following[1]:

Brand Likelihood

Melee Weapons

Ranged Weapons

The selected brand will automatically be rerolled in two cases:

 • the new brand is identical to the weapon's former brand;
 • your god disapproves of the selected brand.
