Demons are unholy monsters from the infernal planes of Hell, Pandemonium and the Abyss. They range in difficulty from minor nuisances like the crimson imp to the mighty Greater Demons, and have a wide variety of powers. They can be brought into the world by summoning them, and they also appear in later levels of the Dungeon, especially the aforementioned infernal branches.
All demons are considered evil, and take damage from holy wrath branded weapons and Holy Word. Many gods award piety for destroying them. Makhleb and Xom may grant demonic servants to their worshipers.
In the ASCII version of Crawl, demons are represented by a numeral representing their tier level (1-5).

Demon List
Demons are divided in five tiers:
Tier-5 Demons
Tier-5 Demons are the weakest class of demons. They're common in the early dungeon, and are often summoned in droves by stronger creatures. Only starting characters should have trouble dealing with these. The imps can be summoned by using Call Imp.
- 5 Crimson imp: A pesky little beast, blinks and regenerates. Otherwise fairly harmless.
- 5 White imp: Has Throw Frost and a cold-flavoured melee attack. Watch your potions!
- 5 Shadow imp: Casts Pain and occasionally Animate Dead.
- 5 Iron imp: More HP and melee power, but slower speed.
- 5 Lemure: Vaguely humanoid blob with almost no HP or other redeeming qualities, save poison resistance.
- 5 Quasit: Decent HP and dexterity-draining melee attacks.
- 5 Ufetubus: Resists cold and has decent EV, but is otherwise weak. Summoned in droves by the Level-3 demon ynoxinul.
Tier-4 Demons
Tier-4 Demons are some of the weakest demons in the game. They are occasionally granted as allies by Makhleb's Lesser Servant invocation.
- 4 Blue devil: Flies and resists cold and poison, but is vulnerable to fire. It has no spells.
- 4 Hellwing: Casts Teleport Self, Teleport Other, and Animate Dead.
- 4 Iron devil: Good AC, moves slowly, resists most elements, hits around as much as an ogre.
- 4 Orange demon: Has a strength-draining melee attack.
- 4 Red devil: Wields tridents and demon tridents, vulnerable to cold.
- 4 Rotting devil: Inflicts rot with its fetid touch; it also trails clouds of miasma wherever it goes.
- 4 Sixfirhy: An electrical imp that moves in bursts of speed. Relatively weak, but electric attacks will heal it.
Tier-3 Demons
Tier-3 Demons are demons of average power that display an assortment of capabilities. Some are notably more dangerous than others.
- 3 Chaos spawn: Moves fast and has a chaos-branded melee attack.
- 3 Ice devil: Strong cold attacks, vulnerable to fire.
- 3 Neqoxec: It will gladly mutate you (usually bad), drain your intelligence, or summon other demons (imps) to attack you.
- 3 Smoke demon: Casts Sticky Flame, Steam Ball, and Smite.
- 3 Soul eater: Moderately powerful demon with a draining attack.
- 3 Sun demon: Strong fire based melee, fast, vulnerable to cold.
- 3 Ynoxinul: A summoner of ufetubi which also casts iron shot.
Tier-2 Demons
Tier-2 Demons are challenging combatants due to significant melee ability. They are the second most powerful tier of demon. All of them can open doors.
- 2 Balrug: Fast, wields branded demon whips, casts powerful fire magic, and smites.
- 2 Blizzard demon: Faster than average and capable of casting powerful Air and Ice Magic.
- 2 Cacodemon: A dangerous debilitating demon, casts Polymorph Other, Slow, Confuse as well as Summon Demon and Bolt of Energy (3d20).
- 2 Green death: Fast, casts Poison Arrow (3d20), Venom Bolt (3d18), Poisonous Cloud (3d9).
- 2 Hell beast: Dangerous melee demons with two attacks (1d28 and 1d20) and can move up to 70% faster than normal speed.
- 2 Hellion: Dangerous, fast, and casts smite-targeted Hellfire. Vulnerable to cold.
- 2 Lorocyproca: Invisible, resists all elements, and possesses a 1d25 antimagic and a 1d25 normal attack.
- 2 Reaper: Wields a branded scythe and can deal heavy melee damage.
- 2 Shadow demon: Demonic summoner which casts Shadow Creatures and Summon Demon.
- 2 Tormentor: Casts Pain and Torment and is faster than you.
Tier-1 Demons
Tier-1 Demons (also known as Greater Demons) are among the deadliest opponents in Dungeon Crawl. All tier-1 demons can see invisible, and all Fiends are capable of inflicting Torment. Fighting, or even being in sight of multiple tier-1 demons, is not recommended. Additionally, a worshipper of Makhleb may summon some of them using the Greater Servant ability.
- 1 Executioner: Moves twice as fast as normal, and will cast Haste at the slightest provocation. With its speed and 3 melee attacks it will tear low AC characters to shreds.
- 1 Brimstone fiend: Casts Hellfire (3d20), Torment, vulnerable to cold.
- 1 Hell sentinel: A demonic construct with excellent defenses, painful spines, and both Hellfire and Iron Shot.
- 1 Ice fiend: Powerful ice melee attacks, summons demons, and casts Bolt of Cold (3d27), Torment. Vulnerable to fire.
- 1 Shadow fiend: Draining melee attack, casts Dispel Undead (3d27), Bolt of Cold (3d27), Bolt of Draining (3d22), Torment.
