This weapon falls into the 'Polearms' category. It is a one-handed weapon.
Demon tridents are the best one handed polearms, dealing significantly more damage than regular tridents. Though demon tridents are slightly weaker than demon blades or demon whips, their reaching ability helps make them more desirable.
Worshippers of good gods cannot attack with them without suffering penance. However, worshippers of the Shining One can convert a demon trident into a trishula, with better stats and the holy wrath brand. You can reverse the process with Kikubaaqudgha's or Lugonu's blessing.
Strategy
Demon tridents are more likely to generate in Shoals than Swamp. In either case, you can find demon weapons in the hands of hell knights around Depths/Vestibule of Hell.
Compared to partisans
With both weapons at mindelay, a +0 demon trident deals the same damage/turn as a +0 partisan against 0 AC enemies. While AC and flat boosts like slaying could alter the calculations, it's not by much - either weapon is enough to win a 3 rune game.
History
- Prior to 0.14, demon tridents dealt slightly more damage than normal in the hands of demonspawn characters.
- Prior to 0.10, demon tridents did 13 damage, but lacked innate reaching.
