A long plaited strip of leather. Originally developed for use in disagreements with cattle, this simple weapon is now widely used to settle differences between all sorts of creatures. |
This weapon falls into the 'Maces & Flails' category. It is a one handed weapon, and it is best used by the dexterous.
Whips are one of the better early game weapons for Maces & Flails characters; they have excellent attack speed even when your skill is low, are easy to find off of kobolds and other early humanoids, and they can carry some very powerful brands. When your weapon skill rises higher, you will eventually want to upgrade to a mace or better to take advantage of the higher base damage, but a whip is a very respectable option early on.

History
Prior to 0.14, whips could possess the reaching brand.
In earlier versions of the game, whips did as little as 4 damage and had 12 base delay, which made them close to worthless.
