With the removal of [[spiked flail]]s, morningstars became the most powerful common one-handed mace.  They were significantly buffed in the process, giving them the best damage of all the common one-handed weapons, although no special abilities such as [[cleaving]] or [[reaching]].  They are reasonable weapons to use until you find an [[eveningstar]] or a [[demon whip]], but those planning to go for 2-handed maces will probably prefer either a [[dire flail]] or (for large characters) a [[giant club]] as an intermediate weapon.

A mace with a head covered in short spikes.

"Little did then his pomp of plumes bestead
The Azteca, or glittering pride of gold.
Against the tempered sword; little his casque,
Cay with its feathery coronal, or drest
In graven terrors, when the Briton's hand
Drove in through helm and head the spiked mace;
Or swung its iron weights in shattering sway.
Which, where they fell, destroyed."

-Robert Southey, _Madoc_. 1805

This weapon falls into the Maces & Flails category. It is a one handed weapon.

Morningstars have the best damage of all the "common" one-handed weapons, although with no special abilities like cleaving or reaching. They are reasonable weapons to use until you find an eveningstar, demon whip, or a two-handed weapon.
