A sphere of crystal, carried in place of a shield. Magic scintillates within its interior.

Orbs are a piece of equipment you can carry in your off-hand. Unlike shields, they provide no defensive value, but come with one of several unique egos:

  • Attunement - Doubles the enhancer effects of magical staves, and gives magical staff melee a chance to recover 1-3 MP.
  • Energy - May refund MP on successful casts (depending on Evocations), and always refunds MP for miscasts, but increases miscast rate.
  • Glass - Has a chance to inflict Vitrify on enemies when damage is dealt, the chance of which scales with evocations.
  • Guile - Reduces willpower of both the wielder and their targets, the latter scaling with Evocations.
  • Mayhem - May send enemies into a frenzy upon killing one of their allies.
  • Mesmerism - Inflicts dazed when hurt in melee, and recharges by standing still. Daze duration, cooldown, and effect radius scale with evocations.
  • Pyromania - Boosts Fire Magic and may cause a 3-tile explosion when an enemy is killed with a non-weapon attack (spells, wands, abilities). Trigger chance and damage scales with evocations.
  • Stardust - Upon spending MP for the first time in a battle, conjures several shooting stars around the player, which behave like foxfires but knock enemies back upon contact and can be shot through. The number of shooting stars created scales with the MP used, and the damage scales with evocations. Recharges after returning to full MP and spending a few turns out of sight from enemies.
  • Light - Surrounds the wielder with a 3-tile halo. Only available when starting as a monk or very rarely from vaults.

Regular and randart orbs will always spawn with one of the egos listed above. Randart orbs may generate with spell enhancers.

History

  • In 0.34, attunement, glass, mesmerism, pyromania, and stardust were introduced, wrath was removed, and light was made monk-only. Prior to this version, guile and energy did not scale with Evocations. Orbs were made more common, too.
  • Prior to 0.30, orbs could not appear as randarts. Also, three unrand orbs were introduced in this version (all formely staff unrands).
  • Equippable orbs were added in 0.28.
