The Innate Casting of a Djinni gives Spellcasting a unique purpose: Spellcasting skill does not raise their MP or HP, but instead determines their spell power for all spell schools (equal effect to training Spellcasting and all other magic schools). While the -3 aptitude seems terrible at first, keep in mind that it counts as double (i.e. an effective +1 aptitude) for dual-school spells, and that every spell you get can run off a single skill.

Version 0.31: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

The Spellcasting skill determines how proficient a character is at casting spells from memory. A higher Spellcasting level gives your character more spell levels and increases your max MP. It also has a minor effect on your spell power and spell success rate (equivalent to having 1/4 of a level in every other spell school).

Note that the max MP increase granted by Spellcasting is not cumulative with that of Invocations; only the higher bonus of the two is used. For this purpose, each level of Spellcasting is twice as effective as Invocations.

Djinn do not get any HP or MP bonus from Spellcasting; they only benefit from the increase to power and success rate.

History

 • Prior to 0.26, Spellcasting lowered your spell hunger.
 • Prior to 0.12, this skill had a hidden cost in experience points of +30% XP; all species had their aptitudes adjusted down to account for this.
