A crossbow with three strings arranged in series to provide exceptional power, initially designed as a siege weapon and then scaled down. It takes a considerable amount of time to load and fire. |
This weapon falls into the 'Crossbows' category. It uses bolts as ammunition.
The triple crossbow is a phenomenally powerful weapon; at 22 base damage, it can compete on a per-hit basis with some of the heaviest two-handed melee weapons. However, it's also one of the slowest weapons in the game. With a base delay of 2.3, it takes a whopping 26 skill in Crossbows to reduce its attack speed to its mindelay of 1.0. Until you get close to that point, you'll likely get much better performance out of an arbalest (which requires a mere 18 skill) or a hand crossbow (only 10, and allows use of a shield). Once you reach those near-max skill levels, however, there is little reason not to upgrade.
