Evocable items are items which can be evoked using the V key. They offer a wide variety of spell-like abilities that have three clear advantages over regular spellcasting: they are not affected by most spellcasting penalties and function under Silence; they do not require MP to use (unless the player has acquired the MP-Powered Wands mutation and then still only for wands); and most of them only require the player to increase the Evocations skill to become more powerful. They are also not banned by Trog, unlike all spells.

Evocable items are magical items, with abilities that are evoked using the V key. Evocables generally use the Evocations skill to determine strength.

On the other hand, their spell-like abilities are usually not as powerful as the ones a spellcaster can achieve after learning the actual spell.

Many evocable items are comparable to spells, with some sharing a similar effect. Unlike spells, evocables do not have a failure rate (though some may check willpower to cause an effect), can be activated during Silence, usually have no MP cost, and are allowed by Trog. However, most evocables are limited by charges. You'll need to gain XP or more charges on the ground in order to use them again. So instead of being a primary means of attack, Evocations tends to be used sparingly as a "side option", to handle situations where they'd be especially useful.

Nevertheless, they are a good choice for non-spellcasting players who wish to have a few magical options up their sleeves. Spellcasters, of course, can always use some of these to save from tapping into their own mana.

Version 0.33: This article is up to date for the latest stable release of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.

Evocable items are magical items, with abilities that are evoked using the V key. Evocables generally use the Evocations skill to determine strength.

Staves

Magical staves deal extra elemental damage in melee, scaling with skill in both their respective magic school and Evocations. Staves are not proper evokers, so are the exception to a few rules. They are magical, and forbidden by Trog. Staves do not have charges. Artefacts may have directly evoked abilities, but they must be wielded and use MP or some other cost in order to cast.

Artefacts

Two unrandart items provide an ability, which scales with Evocations skill and can be activated from the abilities menu:

Wands

Main article: Wands

A wand is a magical device that contains several charges of a specific spell. It does not need to be wielded to be used.

Miscellaneous Evokers

These items can be used to evoke effects. The higher the user's Evocations skill, the more powerful the effect will be.

They have a set amount of charges, and are recharged by XP. Getting multiple copies of an evocable will cause them to merge and increase their enchantment level (max. +5), which reduces the amount of XP required to recharge. The XP required to recharge evocables is also reduced by Evocations skill and Gadgeteer.

Always possible to generate

 • Lightning rod.png Lightning rod: Fires a bolt of electricity; evoking it in successive turns strengthens the bolt and lets you sweep it over an area
 • Phantom mirror.png Phantom mirror: Creates a short-lived copy of a single monster
 • Horn of geryon.png Horn of Geryon: Summons a few sin beasts, some of which may be hostile. Always dropped by Geryon.

Mutually exclusive pairs

Only 1 item from each item set will generate per game.

Elemental/AOE set

 • Tin of tremorstones.png Tin of tremorstones: Creates multiple explosions of shrapnel near the player; always risks hitting yourself, but damage is greatly reduced by armour.
 • Condenser vane.png Condenser vane: Creates harmful clouds around every enemy in sight.

Summoning set

Control set

 • Phial of floods.png Phial of floods: Launches a damaging wave of water, creating a pool of shallow water and waterlogging creatures caught in the wave.
 • Gell's gravitambourine.png Gell's gravitambourine Pulls monsters into a selected radius, holds them in place, while dealing collision damage.

Other Items

History

 • Prior to 0.33, only 1 copy of each miscellaneous evocable could spawn per game, they were immune to Jiyva slimes, and they did not have the level mechanic. In addition, the XP recharging formula was different, depending more on Evocations.
 • Prior to 0.30, miscellaneous evocables were not unique: you could find multiple in 1 game, and they could be eaten by Jiyva slimes. Also, the condenser vane and tin of tremorstones were not mutually exclusive with each other.

Added Evocables

Removed Evocables

Removed Evocations Scaling

These items remained in the game, but lost their Evocations component.
