A plain staff is next to useless as far as weapons go. It isn't quite as bad as a club, but there are plenty of other, far more useful weapons out there. Even mages will want to use something different, as the various types of magical staves will offer useful bonuses to spellcasting and melee combat. Just about the only thing you could use a staff for is training the Staves skill for when you find something better, and with the skill training revamp in 0.9, you don't even have to wield the staff to train the skill.
