A small chunk of dense but otherwise unremarkable natural mineral. It can be thrown by hand or launched with a sling.

"How happy is the little Stone
That rambles in the Road alone,
And doesn't care about Careers
And Exigencies never fears -
Whose Coat of elemental Brown
A passing Universe put on,
And independent as the Sun
Associates or glows alone,
Fulfilling absolute Decree
In casual simplicity -"

-Emily Dickinson, "How happy is the little Stone". ca. 1865.

Stones are an extremely common form of ammo which can be either thrown by hand for minimal damage or launched from a hunting sling or fustibalus (though sling bullets are more effective projectiles). While stones may seem unimpressive, they are the fastest throwing weapon available and can be used to deal small amounts of damage to early game enemies, potentially giving you enough of an advantage to survive fighting an adder or jelly or the like. Additionally, the spell Sandblast consumes one stone each time it is cast and cannot be cast without stones, so Earth Elementalists will want to have plenty of stones on hand as long as they rely on that spell.

For the most part, if you are not planning to use Sandblast, you can largely disregard stones the moment you find a better ranged option. Only characters with investment in Throwing skill and high strength are likely to do anything more than minimal damage with a thrown stone. Slings users may wish to have stones on hand in case they run low on bullets, but most games generate enough bullets that players won't have to worry about ammunition.

History

  • Before 0.20, Sandblast did not require stones to function.
  • Before 0.17, stones were useful as an anti-jelly weapon, as jellies would not eat stones unlike most other projectiles.
  • Before 0.11, mulching a large rock would create a stack of stones.
