Status effects are temporary enhancements and ailments that both you and the inhabitants of the Dungeon can benefit or suffer from. Most status effects will display a colored (often abbreviated) word in your character information for as long as they last. Unlike mutations, status effects will run their course after enough time has passed or after you escape whatever's inflicting the effect. Many status effects can be cured or prevented in a variety of ways; see their individual pages for details.

Beneficial Status Effects
Aug Aug Aug
Cling Cling Cling
Characters in Spider Form can cling to nearby walls, allowing them to cross dangerous, impassable terrain. The brighter the green of the status, the more dangerous the terrain beneath you is.
Casting Deflect Missiles will cause you to strongly repulse almost all ranged attacks fired at you.
Okawaru's Finesse ability doubles the speed of all of your physical attacks.
Your flight is nearly over, but can be extended.
Your flight is limitless! End it whenever you want.
You're flying through a source that cannot be extended the same way it started. Beware of deep water!
Your flight is nearly over and can't be extended! Get to land!
You are well fed! You won't be going hungry any time soon.
All actions performed by a hasted creature take 66% as long as normal to complete.
Okawaru's Heroism ability gives you a +5 bonus to all non-magical skills.
Invisible characters are given bonuses in combat when fighting monsters that can't see invisible. Invisible monsters are difficult to detect and gain similar bonuses when attacking you.
This color is used when your invisible state can be cancelled at will.
Casting Leda's Liquefaction will convert the ground all around you into a soupy mess. This reduces the movement rate and attack success rate of anything stuck in it.
Yredelemnul's Mirror Damage ability causes anyone attacking you to take an equal amount of damage themselves. Be warned; certain monsters can also use this power!
Powered by Death
Using a quad damage will multiply your damage output by 4. Groovy.
Casting Repel Missiles will cause you to repel most ranged attacks fired at you.
The effect is permanent, usually due to wearing an amulet of the Air.
Ring of Flames
Shroud of Golubria
Casting Shroud of Golubria will cover you in a sheath of distorted space that occasionally turns away melee attacks.
The effect is nearly ended.
You are knee deep in water and slow down.
You are on a floor that prevents teleport control.
There are a number of useful alternative forms you can assume:
Detrimental Status Effects
Getting hit by an enemy's Polymorph Other spell will temporarily force you into one of several less-than-ideal forms:
You are so confused that you can't choose which direction you move or attack, and many actions are disabled.
Being constricted means that an enemy is crushing you each turn, dealing damage and preventing you from moving away. Kill it or break free by attempting to move away!
Encumbered / Overloaded
You have a carrying capacity based on your strength score. Carrying too much weight will eventually result in you being encumbered (and eventually overloaded), making you hunger faster and generally penalizing all sorts of actions.
You're so full you can't eat another bite! While this means you're very unlikely to starve any time soon, it also prevents you from eating any food items, some of which have useful additional effects.
Vampires get "alive" status instead. This has a very different set of effects.
Characters suffering from fear will be unable to move toward the source of their terror (but can still attack it as normal). Monsters suffering from fear will flee from you until they hit a dead end or enough time passes.
Hungry/Very Hungry/Near Starving
Hungry Very Hungry Near Starving
You're hungry! Find something to eat before you start starving!
You're flying over lava. Try not to fall in.
You'll see this if you are affected by an enemy's Leda's Liquefaction.
Using certain beneficial status effects, miscasting spells, or stepping in Zot traps can induce magic contamination. While low (dark grey) doses of this is harmless, higher amounts can inflict dangerous miscast effects and bad mutations on you.
A marked character's location is known by all conscious monsters on the floor until it wears off. This can be extremely dangerous on unexplored floors. You can get this effect from alarm traps and vault sentinels.
When mesmerised, you will be unable to move away from the source of your mesmerisation until you've killed it or broken the effect some other way.
Mara's Mislead spell will cause you to perceive all monsters incorrectly. It won't change their stats in any way, but it can lead to unpleasant surprises.
Nausea occurs when you eat contaminated chunks, and prevents you from eating anything until it passes or you hit at least Near Starving hunger. Eating while still nauseous grants reduced nutrition and may make you sick.
If you go lich form while nauseous, the status effect will be put on hold until the transformation ends.
Petrification is a two-stage status effect. While petrifying, the victim is slowed. Once fully petrified, the target is rendered incapable of acting or dodging attacks, gains large bonuses to AC and GDR, stops flying, and becomes vulnerable to Lee's Rapid Deconstruction and stabbing for several turns.
Pois Pois Pois
Poison causes you to take damage as time progresses. The darker the color, the more rapidly you'll take damage and the more you'll take overall.
Characters who go lich form while poisoned will delay the progress of the poison until the transformation ends.
Rot Rot Rot
Slow creatures take 150% as long as normal to perform actions.
You're starving to death! Eat some food soon or you'll start passing out randomly and eventually die.
Vampires get "bloodless" status instead. This has a very different set of effects.
Teleport Control Prevention
You'll be unable to benefit from teleport control as long as you're on a floor which prevents it.
Collapse Clumsy Brainless
At least one of your stats has hit zero or less. Recover it back up to at least 1 quickly or die!
